Safety
The larger beaches in North Devon have RNLI lifeguard patrols present, especially at the busiest times of the year.

At the beaches there are often signs and flags which advise which activities are safe (or not) and the areas designated for particular activities.
On the Beach
Watch for the flags on the beach, the black and white chequered flags indicate the areas designated for surf boarding and watercraft. Swimming areas are usually adjacent but separate from watercraft areas. It is good practice to keep an eye on the positions of the flags as they will be moved by the lifeguards as the tide comes in and conditions change.
If in doubt, or just curious - seek advice from one of the lifeguards.
Kayaking along the Coast
It is advisable to let somebody know where you are going and when you intend to return. Make sure you are visible and take a mobile phone in a waterproof container. If you get into difficulty, the coastguards number is 999 too. Don't overstretch yourself by staying out too long, going too far or leaving your return too late. ALWAYS wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) or "lifejacket" . Most of all, Respect the Sea - it can do stuff you can't even dream about!
